Stuff :: iPod Cases

Back to the other stuff.

I got sick and tired of my old iPod case because it was sticky, icky, and very not-nice-feeling. (It's one of the rubbery elastic stretch ones.)

So I made myself one out of scrap cardboard and duct tape:

And a (crappy-camera) back view:

I soon found out that duct tape does not work horribly well when applied across shear seams -- the duct tape would strip itself of its adhesive, leaving me with a messy gray sticky goo. It just didn't work. (The case was cut to size, then held together using duct tape to ensure a snug fit with the iPod. It was a friction hold.)

I set out to find a case that didn't use tape or any fastening devices -- just the cardboard itself. It'd be simpler, too. I arrived at the conclusion that the best way would probably be with interlocking cardboard tabs on two sides.

The first attempt wasn't too good, but it looked a-okay for what it was supposed to do:

You can probably already see where the design's weakpoints were: the tabs could get ripped off or otherwise severed. It managed to survive my week-long Boston/New York trip, though, and the condition upon returning was passable:

I'll probably make another cardboard case sometime in the future. Stay tuned!
